Stone Soup Dry-land Gathering

June 8 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join Southern Maine Sea Kayaking Network for their 2nd annual “Stone Soup” Kayak Dry-land Gathering at Payson Park in Portland. Our space has been reserved!

There is no alternative “rain-date” if we have to cancel due to inclement weather. So, unless we have crazy crazy weather (last year almost qualified), I expect to be there. I mean … what else am I going to do? So, at least I can test out my foul weather gear!

This is a SMSKN led event that is open to all members and non-members interested in learning more about sea kayaking.

The primary objectives of this event are:

  1. Fun community and fellowship amongst SMSKN members in a low-stress, casual, dry-land environment.
  2. Introduce and/or broaden awareness of sea kayaking to the public.
  3. Promote safe sea kayaking practices.

The “Stone Soup” title comes from the parable of the traveler who visited a small village with nothing but a pot and some stones. But, after inviting everyone in the village to contribute a little something, the entire village feasted on a delicious stew.

With that example in mind … we need volunteers to “contribute to the stew” and I will be hosting a separate, volunteer coordination meeting to get that going.
In the meantime, this is what I know will be there Saturday morning:
1. Joe is bringing all his kayaks (All NDKs) to be available for people to sit in and learn from. (So, P&H and Rockpool guys and gals! Or, other boats?)
2. Joe has been focused camping lately, so is going to bring some different tents and other camping gear and be prepared to speak with interested attendees about the following:
– Difference between 3 and 4 season tent
– What kind of stoves might one consider? Canister gas or liquid?
– Difference between synthetic vs. down insulation on kayaking trips
– How does Joe make dehydrated meals for trips?
– Discuss Greenland vs. Euro paddles (Bring a bunch of Greenland sticks)
– Kayak design differences – be prepared to speak with new folks about different types of kayaks and what to consider when buying a kayak

What are other things we might include???
– Donuts and coffee as long as they last!
– First aid kit compare and stocking station
– Boat repair kit compare and stocking station
– Safety kit compare and stocking station
– Used Gear and Used Boat swap / sale area – we’ll have an area sectioned off for folks with gear they want to sell or swap
