Find checklist and forms below.
Shawnee Peak will open soon! Their new snow making system and efficient snow guns are tuned up and ready. Winter is just about here. All he necessary forms to register, rent equipment, and sign up for lessons are linked below. Lisa will have some copies at her coffee shop, OR I’ve got printed ones with me most days. I hope you’ll be joining in with our Peaks Island Ski & Snowboard Club family trips to Shawnee on Wednesday afternoons. If you have questions, ask your neighbors or call me.
What We Are
We are a volunteer club that is about getting our island kids and families, our community, recreating together during the winter. We are NOT a commercial service; instead we operate from the good work of lots of volunteers and drivers. We want our kids exercising together OUTSIDE, even on the bad days. We operate every Wednesday that Shawnee Peak’s lifts are operating. Over the past dozen years we’ve been as small as 30, as many as nearly 70. If you are in need of high levels of personal service, I’d recommend you contact your local ski area’s professionals. The last few years have involved increasing parental demands. OK. Absolutely please service your kids, perform your due diligence, and if you join our great program, also please try and cooperate with our community guidelines. I’d really appreciate not having to shuffle lots of paperwork the last few days before skiing actually starts and chase down missing bits.
Two different waivers are required this year. Each family unit must agree and sign an additional PISC Waiver of Liability & Release, protecting every other family unit participating in our little Club from the other. This year the paperwork needs be wrapped up by Friday, December 19th at 6:00 pm. If you need a couple of weeks to cover the $ costs, I get that and am happy to accommodate. Just please let me know, and get the paperwork to me.
Who and How Much
Presuming you "get" our purpose, then any and all kids and their families, that live on or are associated with our island communities are welcome to join us. We are happy to include islander’s mainland friends that get our deal.
This program is for six (6) Wednesday afternoons. The cost this year is:
$126 per each child or parent using the lifts, payable by check to Shawnee Peak, for 6 Wednesday afternoon/evening lift tickets. Price increases to $140 after December 19th.
$240 for 6 lift tickets and five (5) lessons; OR $240 for 6 lift tickets and equipment rental; OR $354 for lift, lessons, and rental.
Helmets can be rented for $48, but can be bought for about the same, or use your bike or hockey helmet. We encourage gear exchange and trading around to help keep costs down, and I’ve a few sets of gear to hand out.
Age 5 and under using only the Magic Carpet are free but paperwork is still needed, and an adult is expected to pay to join them on this lift.
The six-week period begins Wednesday, January 8th and goes through Wednesday, February 12th. All island connected kids and parents are invited to join us and their friends. Each child must be accompanied by or overseen by a responsible adult as arranged the the child's parent(s). If you aren’t going or can’t make it a particular week, then please know that you need help arrange for your child’s transport and oversight while at Shawnee. I share by email the list of families so you’ll have emails and phones to check with others on the car shuttle. This regularly works out easily, as most of us involved want to see all kids on the mountain. This lower cost program only works with parental drivers, so reach out to your neighbors to be sure we can get everyone up to Shawnee (and back for the boat!)
All adult and child skiing/boarding participants must print, sign, and return to us:
For anyone is taking ski lessons: (More info below*)
For anyone renting equipment:
If you sign up for the ski lesson program, it runs for five (5) weeks, total cost $114. Each week’s lesson is an hour long, starting at 3:00 pm, ending around 4:00 pm, so you’ve got to hustle along to be on time. Instructors are kid trained and friendly.
**Rental Form Agreement for 2020
For those taking advantage of Shawnee Peak’s excellent and easy Rental program, there are a few changes for this year. Once the paperwork is filled out and gear assigned on Day 1, the same gear will be pulled out, with your name on it, adjusted and waiting for your arrival each Wednesday. It’s easy for the kids to pick up on their own at Shawnee after their first day. Rentals are returned to the rental office at the end of each ski day. Rental Waiver MUST be completed by same due deadline date of Friday, December 19th at 6:00 pm.
If your beginner or novice child is without gear, ask around as our Peaks community has a good stash of school-sized ski and board equipment. I have some extra gear for this season, but know there is lots within our island community. Play It Again Sports is a good source, and many local ski shops offer a season-long rental for our kids. Generally we can help outfit maybe a dozen or so. Also NOTE the upcoming Ski Club equipment sale dates below, OK?
Wednesday ETD and ETA
For those in school on Peaks Island, we all take/depart on the 12:45 ferry each Wednesday, and then meet up with our cars in the CBL lot for transport to Shawnee Peak around 1:05 pm. We usually have a group picked up at King Middle School, from their early release. PHS skiers usually meet us at CBL. This program requires volunteer drivers and enough seats to get all up and back. It has always worked out. Shawnee Peak is open until 9:00 pm, but many of us try to catch the 7:15 pm CBL return to Peaks by leaving Shawnee around 5:30 pm. It’s important to ensure our kids can keep their eyes open in school on Thursday, but older kids often take a later boat home.
Each year we have been able to offer a few scholarships for kids who otherwise would be unable to attend. If you or anyone else would like to help a child who otherwise wouldn't get to join us, please let me know.
