General Paddler "Fit" Ranges

The following are general guidelines based on paddler size, not paddler plus kit.

  • Romany Classic: 120-200 lb paddler
  • Romany Classic Plus: 140-210 lb paddler
  • Romany Surf: 150-220 lb paddler
  • Romany Excel: 200-250+ lb paddler
  • Romany Excel Expedition: 200-250+ lb paddler
  • Romany Sport RM: 150-220 lb paddler
  • Romany Sportive RM: 120-160 lb paddler
  • Explorer: 150-220 lb paddler
  • Explorer HV: 170-240 lb paddler
  • Pilgrim: 90-140 lb paddler
  • Pilgrim Expedition: 110-170 lb paddler
  • Echo: 90-150 lb paddler
  • Latitude: 140-195 lb paddler

Kayak Weights

NDKs are hand-built, so the weight of individual boats varies and is dependent on many factors. Layup, model, colors, weather conditions and humidity during manufacturing are all relevant to the final weight of any composite kayak. The initial layer in the process of an NDK fiberglass boat is the gel coat, which is "hand laid"; this means that the gel coat is layered in the mold by hand with a brush, which builds a thick, solid base. Carbon Kevlar hulls and decks begin with the gel being sprayed into the mold. CK cloth is stiffer than fiberglass cloth, so it lays better on smoother surface of sprayed gel. Sprayed gel reduces weight, although the lighter application is less durable than hand laid gel.

The following are MIKCo's general weight guidelines for our preferred layups:

  • Standard Expedition Fiberglass: 52-56 lb
  • 50/50 Hybrid (Fiberglass hull with Carbon Kevlar deck, bulkheads and seat): 48-52 lb
  • Full Carbon Kevlar: 42-48 lb
