From an idea scribbled on a bar napkin in 1999, Scott MacGregor turned his passion and real life experiences in kayaking and canoeing into Rapid Media, publisher of Paddling magazine. Rapid Media has also partnered with Paddlesports Retailer, a prominent annual gathering and industry sales event.
To Be a Dirtbag, you need to be three things: passionate about something; act outside societal norms; and abandon employment to pursue a certain lifestyle.
Scott’s writings span paddlesports topics as varied as the decades in which he’s been writing: from checking out the eight-knot currents, drastic eddy lines and whirlpools at Deception Pass with Leon Sommé and Shawna Franklin to writing about the term Dirtbag - you need to be three things: passionate about something; act outside societal norms; and abandon employment to pursue a certain lifestyle.
Most recently, Scott wrote about a trip he took with his son, Doug, inspired by the film Noatak: Return to the Arctic, about a lifelong friendship built on traveling rivers. The film’s impact on young Doug led to a voyage encompassing three generations on the Broken Skull River.
